In this 20 minute video, teacher Holiday Johnson of Portland, OR teaches yoga to a group of teens on a teen meditation retreat at Deer Park Monastery in Escondido, CA. The teenagers are brand new to yoga and the class is conducted outside.

Holiday Johnson has been teaching yoga to teenagers for over 30 years. Her Portland-based “Standing on Your Own Two Feet” yoga program is a pillar of support for teens and teen teachers.

Holiday brings her experience and strength of spirit forth in this video and the students respond. (Note that the wind was blowing during this class and may be distracting for some viewers. Holiday’s voice is audible and appreciated, nonetheless.)

We recommend Quicktime Player or iTunes (free download) and a broadband connection on your computer in order to download and view the movie.

Comments from San Francisco-based teen yoga teacher Deborah Stalford: I found the following three components of these excellent videos helpful and inspiring in my work with teens: –Seeing real teens in real classroom situations: If you don’t have a lot of experience working with teens, it is tremendously helpful to see how they realistically behave and respond in a yoga class and to get an idea of their level of maturity. –Observing the instructors: The instructors in each of these videos demonstrates a level of instruction that is appropriate for teens, as well as different ways of engaging them (through humor, challenges, etc.). The instructor in each video has a unique style and personality and it’s fun and inspiring to see how each of them are able to connect with the young people in her own way. –Listening to the commentary: Christy brings so much experience and knowledge to her work with teens and teen teachers. Her thoughtful and well-placed commentary is invaluable for enriching and expanding on what you can pick up from simply observing the class and the instructor.
